Free and Open-Source Hosting Control Panels: Alternatives to cPanel

Important — Self-Managed Software
The control panel described in this article is third-party software and is not developed, maintained, or officially supported by Libyan Spider.
This guide is provided for informational purposes to assist customers using self-managed VPS and cloud servers.
Customers are responsible for the installation, configuration, security, updates, backups, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the control panel and its associated services.
For control-panel-specific assistance, please refer to the software project’s official documentation, community resources, or available commercial support.
Libyan Spider continues to provide support for the underlying infrastructure and services covered by the customer’s applicable service agreement.

What does a hosting control panel do?

A hosting control panel provides a web interface for tasks such as creating websites, databases and users. Depending on the software and installation choices, it can also manage DNS and mail. VPS owners use panels to make repeated tasks easier, but the panel still runs on a Linux server that needs an administrator.

Customers considering alternatives to cPanel often want to reduce recurring licence costs or choose a different stack. Free means there is no panel licence charge under the relevant terms; it does not mean operation is cost-free. Open-source licences grant rights to inspect, modify and redistribute software subject to their conditions. Commercial products can include paid licences and support. These categories can overlap: an open-source project may also sell support or additional features.

Choose by workload, supported OS, account model, recovery plan and the time you can spend administering the server. A lower licence bill can be outweighed by migration work, mail operations or downtime. No panel guarantees security or reliability; patching, monitoring and tested restoration remain essential.

Who should use a self-managed panel?

These options suit customers with their own VPS or cloud instance who can administer Linux, connect through SSH, understand DNS and firewall rules, and operate websites, databases and any selected mail services. You must be able to apply updates, monitor capacity, protect credentials, and keep and restore independent backups.

When to choose another approach

Avoid installing a panel yourself if you have no server-administration experience, cannot maintain backups or updates, require contractual application-level support, or already run a conflicting production stack. Operating email adds deliverability, reputation and anti-abuse work. Shared hosting or an appropriately managed service may be more suitable for a small business that needs to focus on its website; check the actual service scope before ordering.

When to use each panel

Virtualmin GPL

Overview: Virtualmin GPL manages traditional hosting on top of Webmin. Choose a full installation when you need websites, databases, mail and DNS together.

When to use and advantages: Use it for several domains with separate owners and administrators comfortable with a complete Linux hosting stack. Its broad administration tools and backup workflow are useful strengths.

When not to use and considerations: Avoid a full mail-enabled stack for a single lightweight app if you do not need those services. GPL does not include Professional reseller accounts or the paid WP Workbench plugin. Choose the installation bundle deliberately; switching web-server architecture later requires work.

Customer profile: Recommended profile: intermediate Linux administrator; full-stack hosting increases operational responsibility.

HestiaCP

Overview: HestiaCP is a GPLv3 hosting panel for common web, database, DNS and mail tasks.

When to use and advantages: Use it for straightforward PHP/WordPress hosting and separate user accounts. Its installer options, 2FA and remote-backup choices are practical advantages.

When not to use and considerations: Avoid treating it as a general multi-server orchestration system or a turnkey Node.js/Python platform. DNS clustering has a narrower scope. Optional mail scanning needs more memory than a minimal web-only installation.

Customer profile: Recommended profile: beginner with practical Linux experience to intermediate; not a substitute for administration skills.

ISPConfig

Overview: ISPConfig is a BSD-licensed panel with administrator, reseller and client access, and native multi-server management.

When to use and advantages: Use it when an experienced team needs to separate web, DNS or mail services, or manage customer accounts across a planned hosting architecture. Service-role flexibility is its main advantage.

When not to use and considerations: Avoid it when you need the smallest learning curve or a simple single-app appliance. Account design, network trust, service dependencies and multi-node backups require planning. Paid manuals or add-ons are separate from the free core.

Customer profile: Recommended profile: advanced administrator, especially for multi-server deployments.

CloudPanel

Overview: CloudPanel is a free web/application panel under its own license terms. This guide does not classify it as open source.

When to use and advantages: Use it for PHP, WordPress and documented Node.js/Python workflows when DNS and email are handled separately. Site-specific users and a web-focused interface suit application deployments.

When not to use and considerations: Avoid it if built-in mailboxes, a traditional reseller hierarchy or a complete all-in-one cPanel replacement is essential. An external mail service still needs correct DNS and application SMTP configuration; adding unrelated services can create conflicts.

Customer profile: Recommended profile: intermediate Linux/application administrator, or a developer able to maintain the server.

Choose by scenario

ScenarioWhat to consider
One WordPress websiteHestiaCP or CloudPanel are reasonable shortlists; Virtualmin GPL and ISPConfig also host PHP sites. Check memory, caching, PHP compatibility and recovery needs before choosing.
Several client websitesCompare user isolation and quotas: HestiaCP, Virtualmin domain owners or CloudPanel site-assigned users may fit. ISPConfig adds reseller/client roles when you need that hierarchy.
PHP / LaravelAll four can host PHP workloads. Verify the required PHP extensions, document root, queue workers and scheduled tasks; a site-creation wizard alone does not deploy the full application.
Node.js / PythonStart with CloudPanel’s documented workflows. ISPConfig lists Python with Apache; other combinations need administrator-managed integration. Plan process supervision, runtime updates and reverse proxying.
Websites and local mailboxesCompare full Virtualmin GPL, mail-enabled HestiaCP and ISPConfig. Budget for mail resources, PTR, MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, abuse control and delivery monitoring. CloudPanel has no built-in mailbox stack.
Microsoft 365 email with VPS websitesCloudPanel or a web-only configuration of another panel can fit. Keep Microsoft 365 MX and mail-authentication records at your authoritative DNS provider; do not redirect mail to the VPS accidentally.
Multiple hosting serversISPConfig explicitly supports this architecture. Plan service roles, inter-server permissions, monitoring and node-by-node recovery. DNS clustering in another panel is not equivalent.
Small business websiteShared or managed hosting may reduce the administration workload. A self-managed panel makes sense only if someone owns updates, security, backups and incident response.
Multiple customer accountsUse separate accounts and least privilege. ISPConfig suits reseller hierarchies; check GPL versus paid Virtualmin features. HestiaCP and CloudPanel user access should not be assumed to include billing or reseller automation.

Next steps

Test on a fresh disposable instance before migration, confirm a restoration plan, and select only the services you will maintain. Libyan Spider infrastructure support remains governed by your service agreement; panel installation, application faults and mail configuration remain your responsibility.
