How to Set Up a cPanel Email Account in Mac Mail OS X Yosemite

Overview

This guide will help you set up a cPanel-based email account in the Mac Mail app on OS X Yosemite. You'll manually configure incoming and outgoing server settings to ensure a secure and functional setup.

Notes
Use SSL for both incoming and outgoing connections to secure your emails.
Ensure that the username is always your full email address.
Use strong passwords to prevent unauthorized access.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. From the top menu bar, click Mail > Preferences.
  2. Go to the Accounts tab, and click the + (plus) button to add a new account.
  3. Choose Add Other Mail Account, then click Continue.
  4. In the pop-up:
    • Enter your Full Name
    • Enter your Email Address
    • Enter your Email Password
    • Click Create
  5. Mac Mail will attempt to auto-detect settings — disregard the result and click Next.

Incoming Mail Server Settings

  • Account Type: IMAP or POP (choose based on your preference)
  • Mail Server: e.g. mail.yourdomain.com
  • Username: your full email address (e.g. [email protected])
  • Password: your email account password
    Click Next

Advanced Incoming Settings:

  • IMAP Path Prefix: leave blank
  • Port:
    • IMAP: 993 with SSL
    • POP3: 995 with SSL
  • Authentication: Password

Outgoing Mail Server Settings

  • SMTP Server: e.g. mail.yourdomain.com
  • Username: full email address
  • Password: email account password

You may be prompted for more settings. Use the following:

  • Port: 465 with SSL
  • Authentication: Password

Configure Advanced SMTP Settings

  1. Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts.
  2. Select the account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section.
  3. Click Edit SMTP Server List.
  4. Verify the following settings:
    • Automatically detect and maintain settings: OFF
    • Port: 465 with SSL
    • Authentication: Password
    • Allow insecure authentication: ON
    • Username & Password: As used above
