Troubleshooting Cloudflare SSL and Redirect Issues

This article helps diagnose common SSL and redirect issues after enabling Cloudflare.

Overview

Most Cloudflare SSL issues occur when Cloudflare SSL mode, origin certificate status, and website redirects are misaligned. Troubleshoot in the right order: origin SSL first, Cloudflare mode second, redirects third.

  1. Check whether the origin has a valid SSL certificate.
  2. Set Cloudflare to Full (strict) when the origin certificate is valid.
  3. If the site shows too many redirects, check whether Flexible SSL is enabled while the origin redirects HTTP to HTTPS.
  4. Temporarily disable duplicate redirect rules while testing.
  5. Check mixed content if the page loads but browser security warnings remain.
  6. For 525 or 526 errors, review the TLS handshake and certificate validity on the origin.
  7. Test login, checkout, APIs, and callbacks after the fix.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Changing many settings at once.
  • Keeping Flexible SSL as a permanent fix.
  • Forgetting application-level HTTPS settings, especially in WordPress.
  • Ignoring cached redirects in the browser during testing.
