How to switch from POP3 to IMAP on iPhone / iPad

This lesson explains how to switch from POP3 to IMAP on an iPhone/iPad. The transition from POP3 to IMAP can be done by moving messages to folders within your POP3 email account.

Creating a New IMAP Account

After setting up your email account using IMAP on your device as explained in this lesson, (use the same email account that was previously configured as POP3), follow these steps:

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Select a folder within your old POP3 account (e.g., Sent).
  3. Tap Edit in the top corner of the screen.
  4. Select the messages you want to move.
  5. Tap Move.
  6. The folder list will now appear.
  7. Tap Accounts to go back to the previous screen.
  8. In the Accounts list, tap on New IMAP Account.
  9. Tap the folder where you want to move the emails.
  10. Repeat steps 2 to 8 for all other folders.

Disabling/Removing the Old POP3 Account

Once you have successfully moved all your emails to your IMAP account, you can now disable or remove the old POP3 email account from your device.

  1. Go to your device Settings.
  2. Tap on the POP3 account you want to disable or remove.
  3. To disable or remove the account, follow these steps:
  • To disable your old POP3 account, toggle the account off.
  • To delete your old POP3 account, tap “Delete Account” at the bottom.
