How to Manage WordPress Themes Using WP Toolkit

Overview

WP Toolkit can install, upload, activate, update, and remove WordPress themes.

View Installed Themes

1. Open WP Toolkit.
2. Select the installation.
3. Open the Themes tab.

The list normally identifies:

• Active theme
• Installed themes
• Theme versions
• Available updates
• Automatic-update settings

Install or Upload a Theme

1. Click Install.
2. Search for the theme or upload its package, if supported.
3. Review its source, compatibility, and maintenance status.
4. Install it.
5. Preview or activate it.
6. Test the website.

Activate a Theme

Before changing the active theme:

• Create a backup.
• Confirm that required plugins are installed.
• Review widget and menu locations.
• Check whether a child theme is required.
• Test the new theme on staging when possible.

Changing the theme can alter the layout, menus, widgets, templates, and other website functions.

Update a Theme

1. Create a backup.
2. Confirm whether the active website uses a child theme.
3. Review the update.
4. Apply it.
5. Clear relevant caches.
6. Test the website.

Direct modifications made to a parent theme may be overwritten by an update. Customizations should generally be placed in a child theme.

Delete a Theme Safely

Do not delete:

• The active theme
• A parent theme required by an active child theme
• The only available troubleshooting theme

Keep at least one current default WordPress theme available for troubleshooting.

Recommended Practices

• Remove unused and outdated themes.
• Use themes from trusted sources.
• Keep valid premium-theme licences.
• Avoid modifying WordPress or parent-theme files directly.
• Test major theme updates on staging.
