How to Back Up and Restore WordPress Using WP Toolkit

Overview

WP Toolkit can create backups of a WordPress installation and restore supported backups when needed.

Create a Backup

  1. Open WP Toolkit.
  2. Locate the required installation.
  3. Click Back Up / Restore or Back Up.
  4. Enter an optional description.
  5. Select the available backup options.
  6. Start the backup.
  7. Wait for confirmation that it completed successfully.

Create a backup before:

  • WordPress updates
  • Plugin or theme changes
  • Security hardening
  • Debugging or code changes
  • Staging synchronization
  • File-integrity repair

Manage Backups

Depending on your plan, WP Toolkit may allow you to:

  • View available backups
  • Restore a backup
  • Download it
  • Delete it

A backup stored inside the same hosting account consumes disk space and inodes.

Restore a Backup

  1. Open Back Up / Restore.
  2. Select the correct backup.
  3. Verify its creation date and description.
  4. Review what will be restored.
  5. Start the restoration.
  6. Wait for completion.
  7. Clear caches and test the website.

Restoring an older backup may replace newer orders, users, form submissions, comments, content, files, or configuration changes.

Backup Recommendations

  • Do not rely on only one backup.
  • Keep an independent copy outside the website directory.
  • Download important backups when appropriate.
  • Confirm that the backup completed successfully.
  • Check available storage before starting.
  • Retain more than one recovery point.
  • Test restoration procedures for critical websites.

A backup created after a website was compromised may already contain malicious files.

WP Toolkit Backup vs Hosting Backup

A WP Toolkit backup is designed around the WordPress installation. Your hosting service may separately provide full-account or external backups.

Use the appropriate recovery method according to whether you need to restore:

  • One WordPress website
  • The database only
  • Files only
  • Email accounts
  • DNS or cPanel configuration
  • The entire hosting account
